UPDATED COVID-19 PROTOCOLS FOR 2023-24 School Year

  • The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) updated its COVID-19 guidance on 5/11/23.
  • The US ended its federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency declaration on 5/11/23.
  • KCPS will end its current COVID-19 guidelines beginning August 7, 2023.
  • KCPS will continue to follow its policies already in place for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. These are policies EBB and EBB-AP (1).
  • KCPS will add COVID-19 to the student illness exclusionary list. A student who tests positive for COVID-19 must remain home for 5 days and can return day 6 so long as symptoms are improving and 24 hours fever free.
  • Staff will no longer report COVID-19 absences to Human Resources. Staff are to use PTO for COVID-19.
  • KCPS encourages staff to follow CDC guidance and stay home when ill with COVID-19. Current CDC guidelines are to stay home 5 days and return day 6 so long as symptoms are improving and 24 hours fever free. As part of standard PTO provisions, staff may be required to provide medical documentation to their supervisor if staff is absent more than three days or if PTO misuse is reasonably suspected.
  • Trusted community partner Children’s Mercy Hospital is offering no-cost testing for COVID-19, Flu, and RSV for staff and students through the School Nurse at all KCPS sites.
