The “Sankofa” is a metaphorical symbol used by the Akan people of Ghana, generally depicted as a bird with its head turned backward taking an egg from its back. It expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress.  What poem or speech inspires you to reflect on your history and helps to provide direction for your successful future?

Eligibility Requirements Final Submission Process (Sophomore Spring Semester)

Step 1: Apply for admissions to MCC- Penn Valley as a high school student (FREE)

Step 2: Take the Placement Test (FREE) in reading, writing and math at MCC Testing Center:

  • Must score in reading, 248 or higher (Recommended or Not Required)
  • Must score in writing, 246 or higher (Engl. 101)
  • Must score in QAS, 241 or higher and/or AFF 237 or higher (Math 85 or higher) 


ACT score of 21 or higher in each category (English and Math)

Step 3: Complete KCPS Interest Application

Step 4: Enroll in KCPS district through the KCPS Online Application – NEW STUDENTS ONLY (You will receive a link to apply online after meeting eligibility requirements for Steps 1, 2 & 3.) 

Step 5: Submit the complete following documents in a single email to the ECA Office: 
Documents can be submitted to or

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from a current teacher or counselor AND a school administrator or someone of your choice that can speak to your preparation and motivation to be successful in a college environment. Recommendation Form
    • (The letter of recommendation cannot be written by family members, friend, classmate or teammate.) 
  • Current Transcript with test scores
  • Most Recent Accuplacer test scores
  • Submit two essays (minimum of 500 words)
    1. How will earning a college degree enable you to reach your personal and career goals?
    2. Why should you be selected to attend the Early College Academy?
